Cycling watts per kg

How to calculate W/kg

Divide power in watts by body weight in kilograms. A rider with a 240 W FTP at 75 kg has an FTP power-to-weight ratio of 3.2 W/kg.

W/kg = power (W) ÷ body weight (kg)

Why it matters on climbs

When gravity is a major part of the resistance, power relative to mass becomes especially important. On flatter roads, absolute power, aerodynamics and rolling resistance also play a larger role.

FTP and W/kg

Two riders can have the same FTP but different W/kg values. The ratio therefore adds useful context, particularly for climbing performance.

It is not a complete performance score

W/kg is one useful metric, not a complete rating of a cyclist. Aerodynamics, endurance, technique, duration and course characteristics still matter.
